Conflict Alchemy

Can I turn this disagreement into alignment rather than a winner and a loser?

Transform disagreement into alignment. Navigate tension productively and turn resistance into commitment without force.

Every transformation creates conflict, because every transformation redistributes something: budget, status, certainty, identity. A leader who avoids conflict gets polite agreement in the room and quiet resistance outside it. A leader who wins every conflict gets compliance, not commitment.

Conflict Alchemy is the ability to use tension as raw material. It starts with treating opposition as information: what does this person see that I do not? It continues with separating positions from interests, so that two people who want opposite things discover they need the same outcome.

The test is what happens after the decision. When conflict has been handled well, the people who argued hardest are often the ones who implement best, because they were heard.

When it is missing

  • Decisions are agreed in meetings and unpicked in corridors.
  • Your executive team never disagrees in front of you.
  • Two senior people have stopped talking to each other.
  • You settle disputes by deciding, rather than by resolving.

One practice for Monday

In your next disagreement, state the other person's position back to them until they say you have it right, before you give yours.
