Adaptive Intelligence

Am I reading this situation as it is, or as it was?

Read environments accurately, recognise patterns, adjust strategy in real time, and know when to persist and when to pivot.

Most strategic errors are not failures of analysis. They are failures of perception. The leader is looking at today through the lens of the last success, and the data that does not fit is quietly discarded.

Adaptive Intelligence is the ability to see the situation as it is now: who has power, what has shifted in the market, which assumptions have expired. It combines pattern recognition, built over years, with the humility to notice when the pattern no longer applies.

The hardest judgement in leadership is between persistence and pivot. Change too early and you never give a strategy the chance to work. Change too late and you defend a position the market has already left. The adaptive leader sets clear signals in advance for which way to move, and watches them honestly.

When it is missing

  • Your strategy review mostly confirms last year's plan.
  • Competitors you dismissed are now setting the terms.
  • You rely on the same few sources for what is happening.
  • You cannot say what evidence would make you change course.

One practice for Monday

Write down the three signals that would tell you your current strategy is failing, and review them with your team every month.
